The Wessex Regional Genetics Laboratory (WRGL) is part of the Clinical Support and Family Services Directorate of Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust (SNFT) and provides an accredited genetics and genomics laboratory testing service for a core population of 2.6 million in the South Central region of England (formerly the Wessex Region). We are committed to providing a service of the highest quality and carry out analysis on a range of body tissues referred to us by clinicians. Our repertoire includes full molecular analysis, cytogenetic and molecular cytogenetic analyses including Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and array CGH, for detection of both constitutional and acquired conditions. The WRGL is a full member of the United Kingdom Genetic Testing Network (UKGTN)
The WRGL works closely with the Wessex Clinical Genetics Service, located at the Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton. The WRGL is a member of the SCOBEC network of molecular laboratories in Salisbury, Cambridge, Oxford, Bristol, Exeter and Cardiff which, between them, serve approximately one quarter of the population of England and Wales. The WRGL also provides specialist testing to other centres in UK and overseas.
The WRGL has strong academic links with the Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton and has an excellent track record in basic research and service development. We currently hold research grants from the NIHR, MRC, LLR, TSB, Diabetes UK, KKLF and other sources
The WRGL is also host to the National Genetics Reference Laboratory (Wessex) (NGRL – Wessex), one of two UK Reference laboratories funded by the Department of Health
